I would like to address some important points and touch a little on how we approach healing at Wise MindBody Healing. I take pride in my ability to offer mental health offerings, herbal and dietary offerings, along with hands-on offerings.
Wise MindBody Healing is here to fill-in the large gap that exists today in the western model of “health care”. Currently the western model is disease focused.
I would like to invite you to take a step back and observe the current reality of health care in the US, and how healing or curing of disease is approached. You might notice that doctors give you drugs that mask symptoms (and create new ones). Chiropractors adjust your spine. Physical therapists help your posture, muscles and joints and keep you moving to promote healing. Cellular specific (orthomolecular) nutrition and functional nutrition practitioners offer the building blocks your body needs for optimal performance using foods and supplements. Mental health professionals focus on mental health therapies (and usually talk therapy). No one is “curing” any disease, in fact using that word is controversial and often illegal. Let’s stay on topic though,
Today, you’d need to go to multiple different health practitioners if you want to address the “whole” of who you are! The western system compartmentalizes the body systems, and separates the mind from the body when it comes to health and wellness. Bear with me as I explain what I mean by the “whole” of who you are.
A human being is literally a mind and a body. There is “no” separation at all between the mind and body. With a thorough understanding of brain research, mental heath, nutritional research, along traditional healing systems, and my clinical experience this fact becomes glaring like the sun in clarity.
We are a mind and a body. You are both a mind and a body being. The mind and body are connected in fact they are one unit. There is a mountain of research (along with traditional healing wisdom) that support everything I am saying here.
Here are some points to consider:
- Your unconscious mind controls your body.. your body is a part of your unconscious mind and it too controls (and has a strong effect on) your unconscious mind..
- Your body doesn’t know the difference between physical, chemical, and emotional stress. They are trauma.
- Trauma causes disease. Ex. Fibromyalgia almost always occurs after (physical, emotional or chemical) trauma.
- The unconscious mind takes imagined ideas (and TV, day dreaming, etc) as if they were real experiences.
- You feel and you think with your entire being not just with your head..
- You feel with your body. Feelings exist in the body!
- Your gut and heart are your second and third brains! (more likely your first and second brains)
- Memories (or trauma) are stored in the body (in the heart, vagus nerve, fascia, and muscles).. think “muscle memory” these systems bypass the brain yet they know what to do by re-acting to stimuli.
- The bacteria in your gut create hormones that affect your mood! They also help your immune system, help in nutrient absorption, they even create nutrients like biotin.
- Gut health issues cause headaches, depression, skin problems, immune system issues like allergies and inflammation, and more!
- Food allergies cause gut issues (leading to mental health issues)
- Most of us have trauma from early childhood that impact our entire outlook on life and our life experience.
- Any imbalance in your body systems causes stress.
- Chronic stress is trauma.
- Stress speeds aging and is behind disease.
- Stress and trauma are toxic.
- Our modern life introduces millions of unnatural toxins into the mind and body.
- Inflammation is at the root of all pain and dysfunction.
- Enough sleep is crucial to all the body systems.
- Your beliefs and programming controls your body, it also controls your habits.
- Your feelings and emotions are your “inner” senses. Just like the 5 outer senses. They exist to give you information.
- We must deal with emotions. We often make emotional decisions then use logic to justify them.
- Innate intelligence exists.
- The body is constantly re-generating and is designed to repair and clean itself.
- All of your physical systems (think: your hormones, electrical system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, digestive, elimination, etc) and your emotional and energetic systems (mind, unconscious mind, subconscious mind, trapped emotions, molecules of emotions, etc) are inseparable and both impact each other with infinite feedback loops.
- Balance is the optimal state to be in, for all of your body systems.
Here’s a simple example: Emotions might make you to eat sugar..sugar is addictive.. sugar (and toxins) cause the body to create fat (think belly fat in men), this fat increase the risk of all kids diseases including ones that directly or indirectly impact mental health, mood, or cause fatigue, which in turn causes a repeat or continuation of negative emotions and a repeat of a cycle of eating the wrong food and feeling bad. The effects of this can be very wide reaching. This is a trap, we see it with all addictions including sugar addictions and nicotine addictions. Chemical addiction, emotional addiction, habit and fear keep you in this trap. Meanwhile your body is suffering the ill effects of sugar or smoking, etc.
The effects are wide reaching and continues deficiencies, inflammation, blood flow issues can easily lead to depression. Research has linked depression to abnormalities in the frontal cerebral blood flow.. as well to depression.. Functional medicine proves that certain supplements can reduce instances of depression. In addition, improving blood flow to the brain has curative effects.
So, where would you start in breaking this cycle? your doctor? herbalist? psychotherapist? massage therapist? hypnotist? Knowledge alone, and being told what to do alone isn’t enough.. Most mainstream practitioners lack knowledge of the use of orthomolecular nutrition or functional nutrition, they barely have nutrition training, they have no hypnosis training and the list goes on.. so where do you get the help you need?
What you need is a health care practitioner and coach who is not only able to give you the information, but also able to help you lower withdrawal symptoms, help you break the chemical addiction, the subconscious addiction and habits and help you detox. Someone to combine what “works” from traditional healing practices like acupuncture and herbs with modern research like cranial electrical stimulation and orthomolecular nutrition and modern hypnosis <- This is why Wise MindBody Healing exists. I blend the best approaches from cold laser to acupuncture, herbals, potent nutrients, tinctures, hypnosis and body work… Is this health model and approach a new type of health care? I don’t know. It doesn’t matter, what matters to me is that it works.
You are now beginning to see the full picture of who you are and how lasting healing is a holistic kind of healing.
Many use the word “holistic” theses days. A few truly have the education or scope within their practice to be truly holistic. Since you can never know where the root cause of an imbalance is, focusing only on chemicals and nutrition might be missing out on unconscious programming. Likewise, focusing on mental health is missing a huge piece of who you are which is the body.
We, in the US, need more truly holistic “practitioners” on the ground helping individuals heal and be empowered. We have enough research and evidence, what we need is practitioners to bring this into practice. This is what I do at Wise MindBody Healing.
Functional medicine research shows that many suffering with depression, anxiety, even schizophrenia have major deficiencies. Either in vitamins or minerals.. Our mental health relies on our physical health! Physical health here implies the health of your entire body and all its systems, digestive, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, absorption, elimination, along with the energetic system and the physical structural balance.
The simple act of having a tense jaw muscle sends signals to your unconscious mind telling it that you must be experiencing stress which then triggers a stress response, stress hormones etc.
Think of your body as a house, it needs constant maintenance and care. Think of it as a car, when your check engine light comes on, you investigate the issue. Modern medicine covers up the light with black tape without addressing the root cause of the imbalance and dysfunction.
The root causes to most disease come down to 3 simple but broad targets. The mindbody is thrown out of balance when these exist:
1- Toxins. Toxins can be caused by an abundance of a “substance”, or the presence of a harmful substance. This “substance” is either mental (in the psyche and unconscious mind), physical (heavy metals, unnatural or toxic man-made chemicals), made in your body (the fact of being alive creates oxidative stress, hormonal imbalances are toxic, etc), and energetic (negative thoughts, trauma energy, Qi blockages, etc). Toxins can be internal or external. The exposure can be chronic or short term.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
2- Deficiency. Too little of an important substance. This could be vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, beneficial microbes, oxygen, anti-inflammatory substances, along with a deficiency in positive thoughts (unconscious beliefs, coping skills, developmental milestones, etc), or a deficiency in an energetic quality (life force Qi or the yin/yang or dosha balance) .. Deficiencies can be internal or external (sun light in winter). The exposure can be chronic or short term.
.
.
.
.
3- Trauma. Trauma, physical and emotional can be caused in the womb or during birthing. Accidents also cause these.. Chronic exposure to emotional stress, or environmental stress also is considered trauma. The mind and the body “store” trauma. For instance, fascia covers and connects your entire body, fascia torsion will throw your diaphragms, joints and spine out of balance. In addition, trauma and feelings are stored in body tissue.. These can only be released with hands-on bodywork.
.
.
.
.
An imbalance in one or all of these causes other imbalances and malfunctions.. from inflammation to pain, from soreness to headaches, progressing up to “diseases” such as arthritis and alzheimer .. toxins stored in fat, adrenal fatigue, not enough enzymes, not enough hormones, stagnation in glands and organs, yeast overgrowth, sluggish digestion, sluggish mind etc..
Now you are seeing the larger picture more clearly.
When we have a balance, the internal environment of the body remains favorable to health and the body’s systems functioning to maintain, clean, kill cancer, re-build, etc
To promote healing, sometimes these 3 need to be restored to balance.
This is what I do at Wise MindBody Healing. Restoring balance to the whole of you is our goal.
By restoring balance to your mind, body and energy systems.. The chemical, nutritional, structural, emotional, mental balance, the body will heal itself because that is what it does all the time and what it is designed to do.
- Dysfunction happens when imbalances exist.
- Prevention is better than a cure.
- Working “with” the mindbody systems is better than blocking these systems (since they are all interconnected)
We all know the saying, when your tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. This is what happens in the health care field in the US.
To a Medical doctors, her tools are pharmaceutical drugs (this is the only training they have) so to them the only solution to your problem comes from the phrama world. A psychologist, psychotherapist, or hypnotist knows mental health tools and they use these tools for every problem they encounter.
Physical therapists and massage therapists have multiple hands-on tools and they are limited to what they can do with their hands. Herbalists and functional nutrition physicians utilize foods, herbs, supplements, detoxing etc and these are their tools and they are limited to them.
You see my point, you are a mindbody unit, you are a mind-body-energy system, you need support on multiple fronts, mind, body and energy.. You need a practitioner with multiple tools, not only to address your mental emotional needs, your physical needs, your hands-on needs, your energetic needs..
This type of practitioner used to be the old fashion doctor, the naturopathic doctor.. We need practitioners that are competent and not afraid to take on the whole you, the education it takes, to help each client and offer them options, meet you where you are and give you the best solutions. You need a practitioner who is not biased and stuck within their own mind, system and box who would want fit you within their own box, make you a nail. Today, we exist but we are far and between. I am proud to be one of these healers.
The MindBody Healing approach is completely holistic this means a couple things:
We promote the functions of the body that we desire. Allopathic medicine (your MD) uses pharma drugs that “block” pathways in order to suppress symptoms. Blocking a pathway often results in side effects because every pathway and every gene in your body is connected to some other gene and pathway.. all the systems work together, gene expression is impacted by many factors (epigenetics)..
Unlike allopathic physicians, what I do is aligned with nature, we “promote” the behavior we want, we strengthen pathways that we prefer. We introduce the beneficial nutrients, microflora, and ideas that will setup an “environment” that is healthy.
We remove the toxins whether they are chemical, mental, or energetic
We introduce nutrients that are chemical and mental and energetic.. to balance the body structure with bodywork…
My approach is free of ego and conflict, I gracefully bring together the wisdom of classical healing systems such as Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and herbalism and marry them to modern brain, orthomolecular, and mental health research which has supported a lot of the wisdom these systems contained.. My work is “naturopathic”, I work with nature not against it.
My rules are
- Do no harm
- Restore balance
- If it works, it works
- All healing is self-healing
- I am only a facilitator
Some chiropractors have embraced a similar philosophy believing in balancing the body to allow innate wisdom of healing. Functional medicine physicians focus on the chemistry of the body, they do embrace detoxing, nutrition and also talk about emotions and skills. Acupuncturists and Ayurveda practitioners follow a similar philosophy. But none of them use hypnotherapy. TCM does acknowledge and incorporate emotions into their theory pretty well. Ayurveda says the body is a crystallization of the mind.
As you can see, many systems modern and traditional have acknowledged the importance of having a holistic all-inclusive view and attest the interconnection of the mind and body and all of the body’s systems.
In today’s world, due to our culture, it isn’t easy for one to find a healing practitioner with a broad set of skills. We’ve separated the mind from body; we’ve separated internal health from bodywork; we’ve separated the emotions from the body even though feelings happen “in” the body. We don’t acknowledge the fact that energy exists. We focus on knowledge more than experience or intuition. We dismiss the ancient classical wisdom until a modern research study can prove it…
There is a lot more now in terms of research and professionals researching the mind-body connection. We have mind-body medicine, and health psychology, along with researchers coming out in TED talks explaining all of this. However, while research is abundant, we lack in practitioners, people on the ground bringing this research, and skills, to help clients. Most of my clients come to see me after they have seen many doctors and suffered for years.
This is due to our culture and what we’ve been told healing looked like, or where we can go to seek help. It isn’t easy finding someone able to handle mental health, internal physical health, and body work, someone that knows herbalism and nutrition along with mental health and bodywork. That’s why I am doing this.
I couldn’t separate these nor could I offer my clients only one option. I am able to be more of service, and I offer better, more well-rounded help and value to my clients due to this.
We’ve made progress with evidence-based medicine, however in my opinion, due to licensing and the continuation of compartmentalization in the health field, not to mention the influence of big money on these, we are far from having true holistic care in the US.
While a lot of academics are studying and lecturing on mind-body medicine and the topics I covered above, very few are doing the work on the ground with the individuals that actually need this information to be presented to them and utilized in a digestible manner. What good is knowledge if it isn’t used? That’s why Wise MindBody Healing exists. It just makes sense doesn’t it?
